Last night was an aural treat! Six wonderfully talented young singers took to the stage in a musical battle that was of the highest quality from the first note to the final beat. The judges deliberated for a long while (apologies to the audience) as each of the contestants really did have something special to offer. In the end the following 3 were chosen as the Top 3:
Winner 2012 – Candice Thornton
(R25,000 cash prize, Shure SM58 from Wilde & Marr, Nuthouse Studio demo recording session, iCandyDesign package, Flash of Madness photo shoot, public performance on CTIJF 2013 courtesy espAfrica, performance on Love Jazz Cruise 2013, performance Jazz on the Rocks 2013)
1st Runner up – Mikhaela Kruger
(R7,500 cash prize, Shure headset, 2 nights mid-week stay at Table Bay Hotel)
2nd Runner up – Berenike Monney
(R5,000 cash prize, Shure headset, 2 nights mid-week stay at Golden Valley Casino)
It’s always a bitter-sweet moment for me when we finally decide on the Top 3 because it means that there are 3 others who have unfortunately not made it thru. I know just how much each of these contestants wants to win, and each of them has worked incredibly hard to get to this point. But, I guess that’s the nature of a competition!
The 3 who unfortunately didn’t make it thru were Dino Karelas, Karabo Maimela & Jaquelyn Kwenda. Each of them has noteworthy talent and gave outstanding performances. Watch out for these three talented singers. I know we will see and hear more of them in the future.
So, another Open Mic Jazz Competition has reached it’s 3-month end. I can’t believe we are here already. It has been the most exciting competition of the 4 that we’ve run. There’s been SO much more interest from the public and industry people alike and I have a feeling that year 5 – 2013 is going to be bigger and better. I’m excited!
As I mentioned in my somewhat lengthy speech last night, there are MANY people to thank. This competition runs well because it is made up of people who are experts at what they do:
